Woollahra Station – A Controversial Train Station

Woollahra Station, located in Sydney’s prestigious Eastern Suburbs, has long been one of the most controversial and debated infrastructure projects in the area’s history.

Originally planned in the early 1970s as part of the Eastern Suburbs Railway line, the proposed station at Woollahra was met with strong and consistent opposition from the local community.

Despite being partially constructed—including platforms and tunnel access—the station never officially opened. Residents of Woollahra voiced concerns about noise, disruption to the tranquil residential character of the suburb, and the environmental impact on nearby parks and green spaces. This community resistance played a major role in halting the project, and the station was eventually abandoned.

Woollahra Ghost Station

Today, Woollahra Station is a ghost station, but the State Government faces a major challenge in approving new development sites in the city and increasing new residential properties has a plan to modernize the station and authorize the construction of some buildings in the area.
